End of Year Attainment and Progress
For smaller schools, reports of attainment are affected more by the make-up of a cohort as each child is 'worth' a larger percentage figure. Figures should therefore be read with an understanding of this.

SUMMARY
This is the last cohort who will have progress measured against levels achieved in Year Two (as future cohorts were assessed post levels).
- Expected+ in Reading and Maths DEMONSTRATES GOOD PROGRESS and is above national average
- We expected 13% at greater depth in all areas – so that’s one child below in Writing and Reading, but inline for Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling
- Following Local Authority moderation of the children’s writing, the following was established:
- More recently introduced key objectives were missing from the pupil’s work
- There needed to be more examples of extended writing, that had gone through the process of self and peer improvement
- Although there were many very clear examples of expected objectives being met, within the same writing were also some examples of objectives that hadn’t been met
We therefore need:
- to be more rigorous in moderating extended writing during the year, so have timetabled this to take place termly
- to ensure staff are supporting children to peer and self improve their writing
- to ensure staff are working from the latest objectives and attend CPD if they need further support

Attainment and Progress 2016 - 2017
At the end of each year we are required to share outcomes for our KS2 (Year Six) and KS1 (Year Two) children. However, we have only two pupils in Year Six this year, so statistical conclusions would not be appropriate for such a small sample. The Department for Education do not compare data for cohort samples of less than eleven pupils. The outcomes are as follows:

KS1 outcomes are improved for the school compared to last year. For those children working below expected outcomes, the very large majority are at the higher end of emerging and close to expected outcomes. The children in Year Two have also made good progress this year.
Y1 PHONICS
88% of pupils passed their Phonics Assessment, compared to 81% Nationally. These are the strongest set of results we have so far reported at Thornsett.
DISADVANTAGED PUPILS
We are also challenged as a school to deliver the same outcomes for disadvantaged pupils, compared to their peers. We are an inclusive school and work hard at supporting all pupils. A review of progress during 2016-2017 shows our disadvantaged pupils are in many cases making similar progress to their peers and this is also really encouraging.

We are also able to report an excellent overall school attendance figure, that is just better than the average for the County. This reflects children at Thornsett Primary enjoying being at school and parents working within the school’s Attendance Policy in terms of minimising term-time absence.
Attainment and Progress 2015 - 2016
Where we have been able consistently to report 'good' attainment and 'at least good' progress for several years now (see 2013-14 and 2014-15 below), it has been less easy to unpick attainment and progress this year - given the new end of key stage assessments, outcomes, attainment and progress measures. Recent discussions with our SIP (School Improvement Partner) Richard Foulkes suggested the following:
- EOKS2 progress was broadly average across Reading, Writing and Maths
- EOKS2 Maths (89%) and GAPS (78%) attainment was above National averages, whilst Writing (56%) and Reading (44%) and combined Reading, Writing and Maths (33%) was below
- 11% of children achieved the higher level of attainment in Reading, Writing and Maths
- Reading average scaled score was 99.7
- Maths average scaled score was 102.8
- EOKS1 progress could be linked to their level of development at the end of Reception. This is not recommended as:
- children should not be compared in this way,
- the children are now completing a much more challenging KS1 curriculum than before,
- we teacher assessed strictly against a ‘secure’ fit (children have to have met ALL objectives to meet expected outcomes) where it appears Nationally some other school did not, and
- some of the cohort were assessed at a good level of development by their previous school, but were not realistically at this level. It will not be a surprise if attainment and progress data for EOKS1 looks less sound than in previous years.
- 62% of Y1 children ‘passed’ their phonics test. Of those that didn’t, several had some measure of SEND, but will pass at the end of Y2. This is below National averages.
- 76% of REC children achieved a good level of development – in line with National expectations.
- We have identified groups and children in school who require different / extra support and are already discussing how to refine and deliver this more effectively
- An analysis of effective support for disadvantaged pupils (over 16,000 schools sampled) shows Thornsett were very effective in supporting such children
As in all smaller schools, comparisons with National averages are less robust as a single child is often 10% of a cohort. For example, our Y6 cohort size of nine immediately made us exempt from floor standards.

For our Reception children attainment and progress have been good. At baseline in Sept. 2014, 50% of our children were broadly IN-LINE with age expectations across ALL aspects of the first 12 Early Learning Goals. By June 2015 this had increased to 69% (compared to 52% nationally). |

Outcomes are good compared to National expectations - we have less children at the lower attaining levels (2c and below) and more children at higher attaining levels (2a and above). This is very pleasing as this cohort at the end of Foundation stage was very much IN LINE (only 10% above, but 20% below expectations). The children have therefore made better than expected progress.
Attainment and Progress 2013 - 2014
The average progress for Thornsett children this year is Good / Outstanding.
100% of children made expected progress or better in all subjects.
